SHOW RING.

Showing and the Show Ring is an intrical part of the British Equine industry.  It is what has made our British Horse and Pony Breeds famous throughout the world.  It is an open market system with straight competition which takes the standard forward and produces quality.  The "standard" for whatever sport, racing, show jumping, showing, is always the winning animals.  Between all the different Breed Societies and Organisations, hundreds of different competitions are provided, whether for the breeders who provide the animals for each of the classes, to the ridden classes themselves.  There is something for everyone, with variety being the name of the game.

There is something for everyone

To explain the difference between the open market system and that of Sweden’s unique avelsvärdering system.  With the open market system after your stallion has been passed by the Vet, you licence him with his Breed Soc, then you are free to compete with everyone else.  It is a lengthy and expensive business to breed, prepare and market a stallion.  Owners embarking on this business are aware of the standard and competition.  In open competition nothing is hidden, no stallions are stopped by some panel, so the competition you see is genuine and you can make an informed decision.  Judging accessments are done in the show ring comparing like with like, either by Breed, or by Type and bringing the best forward.  It compares conformation, movement, manners and a general overview.  Pedigree is not judged because of bias. Merits gained under several judges at several venues gives a fairer accessment overall.  Most importantly your stallion has the possibility to be seen.  Judges can have no connection with animals or owners. Judging is done “blind” meaning  no details of pedigree or ownership are known to the judge at the judging.

There are different tests, the 30 day and 100 day tests for stallions to compete for performance and Grading, but by far the best test is their competition career and merits gained.  Mare owners have 100% choice. The knock on effect of this system is, Shows are provided up and down the country which is vital for the rural economy.

Sweden’s AV system.  In this system, prior to the possibility to compete,  you must first put your stallion infront of your Breed Society AV panel and they decide over you whether he can compete and be used or not for breeding in Sweden.  They are stallion owners themselves and your direct competitors, they have his pedigree and ownership as reference.  Unless you are in the inner circle or use their stallions you will not get in.  It’s worse than a lottery, where at least you have a random chance.  If they see you as a threat in any way, if your stallion is better than theirs which would take business away from them and show them up in the process, there is absolutely no way you will get entry.  So the standard due to no competition and set by themselves, can neither be true nor anything more than their own stallions.  They decide your business.  Because there is a financial interest and the judgements subjective, no one can be deemed impartial.  Therefore this system is unsound.

AV goes against everything the EU and free democracies stand for.  It is the reason the countryside is dead and the rural economy poor.  You cannot make business decisions when these people decide over you, therefore many small farms are stopped and the countryside goes into decline.   It is extremely important we look after the countryside but we must be given the possibility to do so.  It’s to do with freedom of choice and personal liberty.

Welcome to the British Riding Pony Breed in Sweden....

.......and it's relation to general RP and Sport Pony breeding in Europe.  All Riding Pony and Sport

Pony breeding depend on good base Race breeding.  Continental Sport Ponies all have BRP/Welsh

breeding behind them.  It is vital the Breeds, whether British Riding Pony, Welsh, New Forest or

any of the "ingredient" Breeds  “dipped into”, are protected.  Keeping the Breeds True in Sweden

by fully following  Home "Society" rules is paramount. (see British Native Breeds).

The BRP Breed has been selectively bred for 130 yrs from a gene poole second to none and we have

today  a wonderfully refined, quality animal that is able to win at top level in Show Jumping,

Eventing, Dressage as well as the Show Ring.  Todays breeders, ever aware of changing

times, recognise peoples desire for not only outstanding quality but also for big extravagant

movement and athleticism, to produce versatile animals that can excel in any sphere.  The BRP is

to the pony world what the TB is to the horse world.  Today we want it all,  to breed Best in Breed

and the Ideal Sport Pony all in one!

trial points. (See Photo Gallery for contacts).

The Breed has three catagories.  Show Pony (SP), Show Hunter Pony (SHP) and

Working Hunter Pony (WHP).  All Types can be and are Sport Ponies. As with any

Breed different ponies have different abilities.

The Show Pony is refined, elegant and has outstanding quality with free

floating movement. Example under. Many a Show Pony has a big jump, is very

agile and quick against the clock!

The Show Hunter Pony has the same attributes as the SP, but generally with a

 little more substance.   Example under.

The Working Hunter Pony is a quality pony with a more substantial look,

similar to the Continental (German, Danish, Dutch) Sport Pony look (all of whom

have BRP and Welsh behind them).  Hunter ponies are bred to go over rough

terrain, with staying power and good jumping ability. Example under.

Note: When you see a Show Pony/Show Hunter Pony in the Show

Ring it is presented plaited and immaculately turned out for Judging.

The same pony will look very different turned out for eventing or

show jumping.  It's "dressing" for different sports. We therefore show

you ponies of the same breeding doing different jobs as visual evidence

of their versatility in the Photo Gallery.

The Tradition of Showing in the UK & its Merits.

In Sweden Showing is often dismissed as easy and of little consequence.

At the very least it is misunderstood.  The reason is, 90% of competition

is jumping.  The market is for ridden 6 yr olds and over.  There isn't as

yet a tradition of breeding in Sweden, but with so many

stallions now available on FAI worldwide, it will soon become so.

The UK and Ireland have a strong breeding tradition and the merits

of "Showing" are clear to be seen in these pages.  The British Breeds are

exquisite and Swedes, like many, have imported them because of the exceptional breeding.

This excellence is entirely due to the Show Ring and Showing.  Judging has been passed down

through the generations from knowlegeable horsemen and women to today's skilled judges and

the excellence of their job is reflected in full Rings, good entry figures and knowing the rest of

the world buy our breeding. Showing has given us what we have today.  It's the the shop

window for breeders,  is big competition and the standard gets higher and

higher. The Country's breeders are the suppliers to their equine Industry.

They produce different Types for different jobs, whether for Sport Horse and

Sport Pony breeding, or to a Breed standard.  The Show Ring has been long

recognised as the perfect introduction for young animals and young riders alike

to gain ring craft as they progress into different competitions.

With Frozen semen now available from Pennymore Stud AB, Swedish

breeders can compete on the world stage.  We hope through this site to

help you achieve your goals and in ten to fifteen years to see Sweden with

as diverse a breeding programme as in the UK and others countries.

For many mare owners the use of frozen semen can open up a whole

new genetic base not previously available to them thus helping to

improve their existing stock. In some of the minority breeds where

there are very few stallions available to choose from the use of

imported semen becomes an option which requires careful

consideration.
