The National Pony Society registers ponies
of British Riding Pony Breeding
for entry into the National Pony Society Stud Book in the UK
and in the Brittiska Ridponny Föreningen Stud Book in Sweden.
The British Riding Pony – A Brief History 1893 - Present Day
· The British Riding Pony is the result of skilful, selective breeding for type, over a period of many years. It is essential to realise that the pedigrees of the British Riding Pony can be traced back over many generations.
· Originally, the National Pony Society was formed to become a Stud Book for the Polo Pony. Twenty years later it was renamed the National Pony Society, as emphasis was placed on ponies being bred to be “suitable for riding purposes”.
· The small Thoroughbred, Arab and the British Mountain and Moorland pony, notably the Welsh (which was extensively used to retain the height limit of 14.2hh (148cm) have had the greatest influence on the foundation of the British Riding Pony.
· In 1949 the British Show Pony Society was formed to govern the Ridden aspect of the Riding Pony, whilst the National Pony Society dedicated its aims to running the Stud Book and overseeing the welfare of the British Native Breeds.
· During the 1950’s various eminent Breeders became dedicated to the task of cultivating the British Riding Pony as we know it today – the most singly influential sire being the legendary BWLCH VALENTINO, himself a product of the “perfect” 3-way cross: Thoroughbred, Arab and Native (Welsh).
· The cross can instead be made with the larger native Breed of British Native Pony, which creates the ideal mount for both teenage and adult riders.
· Today the British Riding Pony is much respected and sought after world wide, and a large proportion of our best Bloodlines have been exported, predominantly to Australia and New Zealand from whence we are now re-importing frozen semen to re-introduce to our current breeding programmes.
The British Riding Pony – A Definition
The British Riding Pony is best described as “originally the result of crossing Thoroughbred and or Arab with one of our Mountain and Moorland Native Breeds and is now normally recognised as the progeny of British Riding Pony sire and dam. This is an animal of outstanding quality that is a true pony retaining the pony characteristics of good temperament, hardiness and surefootedness. It possesses the ability to make the ideal Ridden Pony.
British Riding Ponies are categorised into Show Ponies, Show Hunter, Working Hunter, or Sports (Performance) Ponies. Each type has its own qualities, characteristics and uses whilst retaining the characteristics of the true pony. It is generally recognised that the ‘type’ is hard to define. People will always have differing views. However, the basic description, applied to the Show Pony can equally be used to describe the Show Hunter, Working Hunter or Sports (Performance) Pony:
a) The pedigree may include ponies from any recognised Native Pony or British Light Horse Stud Book, eg Thoroughbred or Arab and regularly the pedigree is now derived from British Riding Pony stock.
b) It is acceptable and sometimes desirable to return to the ‘gene pool’ of original pure blood ie Thoroughbred, Arab or Registered Mountain and Moorland, if the Breeder so desires.
c) All Mountain and Moorland and Arab Part-Breds should be eligible for registration with the NPS British Riding Pony Stud Book providing their breeding meets the criteria.
d) Crossed with the continentally bred Sports Horse or Pony, the resulting offspring of British Riding Pony or British Native Pony may be registered in the NPS Sports Categories Stud Book.
The British Riding Pony - General Appearance, “Type” and Characteristics
The British Riding Pony should have a good quality head, honest with a bold intelligent, well set eye. The neck should be well muscled, not cresty or ewe necked, with good, flat sloping shoulders, deep heart room and well sprung ribs. It should have powerful quarters which flow down to strong hocks. Good joints are required with hard flat knees, a short cannon bone and well shaped feet.
The British Riding Pony must have well balanced fluent action and move freely from the shoulder with good natural impulsion from the hindquarters. A certain amount of knee action in the Show Hunter, Working Hunter or Sports (Performance) pony would be permissible but stiff or stilted action is most undesirable.
· The height at maturity must not exceed 14.2hh (148cm) for Show Ponies, 15.0hh (153cm) for Show Hunter, Working Hunter and Sports (Performance) Ponies
· A Show Pony should have the type, quality, bone, elegance, refinement and movement expected of a smaller edition of a high class thoroughbred, whilst retaining true pony characteristics.
· A Show Hunter, Working Hunter or Sports (Performance) Pony should have the type, quality, bone, substance and movement expected of a really high class Middleweight Show Hunter or Eventer whilst retaining true pony characteristics.
Whichever ‘type’ is bred, the resulting cross-bred is, by definition, a British Riding Pony.

19.7 |
Once registered, a prefix may not be used by any other person other than the breeder in whose name the prefix has been registered |
|
19.8 |
A prefix is registered for life |
|
19.9 |
A prefix dies with the owner unless provision has been made for the inheritance of a prefix |
|
19.10 |
It is strongly recommended that the owner of a prefix makes provision (if desired) for the prefix to be inherited upon their demise. This can be done by inclusion in a legally recognised Last Will and Testament or by notifying the NPS in writing of this express wish. Without written instructions the prefix dies with the owner and can never again be used by anyone |
|
19.11 |
A prefix may be registered in the name of more than one breeder operating from the same establishment. All breeders named as the owner of that prefix will be credited as the breeders of all ponies carrying that prefix. The first named owner will be deemed to be the principal owner of that prefix and shall retain that prefix in the event of a dispute. The address of the principal owner will be used in all correspondence and will appear under the breeders’ names on any documentation. The National Pony Society strongly discourages joint ownership outside the family and reserves the right to decline such a request |
|
19.12 |
A breeder’s name may be added to or removed from the ownership of a prefix. Such a request must be made in writing to the NPS and all current holders of that prefix must sign this request to confirm their agreement. The NPS will approve the change and inform the Central Prefix Register in order that records can be amended. The Central Prefix Register may make a charge for another Certificate to be issued in the names of the new holders of the prefix. The National Pony Society reserves the right to decline a request to extend the ownership of a prefix and strongly discourages the addition of owners outside the family |
|
19.13 |
The ownership of a prefix may be transferred into new ownership
The NPS must receive such a request in writing. This must be signed by the existing prefix owner to confirm that they are relinquishing the prefix and by the new owner to confirm that they accept ownership of the prefix. The NPS will approve the transfer of ownership and inform the Central Prefix Register in order that records can be amended. The Central Prefix Register may make a charge for another Certificate to be issued to the new prefix owner. The National Pony Society reserves the right to decline the transfer of ownership of a prefix and strongly discourages the transfer to owners outside the family |
|
19.14 |
Where a family member of a jointly owned prefix wishes to set up their own stud at a different location but wishes to continue using that same prefix, it may be possible to do so with the addition of initials in brackets after the name of the prefix. In this way each member of the family breeding ponies independently but with the same prefix may be identified. This is not a common occurrence and would require the written and signed agreement of all parties involved. The National Pony Society reserves the right to decline such a request |
|
19.15 |
Where a breeder resident abroad wishes to register his/her prefix for use when registering stock with the NPS, the prefix should be registered with the CPR in the usual way, but the abbreviation of the specific country placed directly after the prefix in brackets |
|
19.16 |
Prefixes registered for use with the NPS but never used with the NPS or any other society with which the prefix may have been extended for use may be relinquished after 20 years. The NPS will make every effort to contact the registered owner and their immediate family to ensure that there is no intention to use the prefix in the future |
|
19.17 |
There are no other circumstances under which the NPS will relinquish a registered prefix for use by someone else |
|
20.0 |
Service Certificates |
|
20.1 |
The National Pony Society issues a complementary book of Service Certificates to Stallion Owners with each Stallion Licence issued |
|
20.2 |
Additional books of Service Certificates can be purchased from the office on request |
|
20.3 |
It is the responsibility of the stallion owner to ensure that the Service Certificate is fully and accurately completed at the time of covering |
|
20.4 |
The Service Certificate must be given to the mare owner in order that the resultant foal may be registered |
|
20.5 |
The mare owner should check that the stallion owner has completed the Service Certificate fully and accurately. These details must match the information provided on any application to register the foal and must also match the information the NPS holds on the Registrations Database |
|
20.6 |
The National Pony Society will only accept up to date Service Certificates issued by recognised Breed Societies. Hand written or computerised stud Service Certificates are no longer acceptable |
|
21.0 |
CERTIFICATES OF CASTRATION |
|
21.1 |
Applications to register geldings must be accompanied by a Certificate of Castration or other acceptable Veterinary evidence that the pony is no longer entire |
|
21.2 |
Certificates of Castration may be obtained from the office or downloaded from the NPS Website. Acceptable Veterinary Evidence may include a JMB Height Certificate or Vaccination Record Card |
|
22.0 |
LOAN/LEASE AGREEMENTS |
|
22.1 |
There are occasions when an owner/breeder may wish to loan/lease a pony to another owner/breeder. This may be done for any number of reasons |
|
22.2 |
The NPS must be informed when Loan/Lease Agreements are made for the purposes of breeding foals. It is a registration requirement that the dam of a foal be in the correct ownership |
|
22.3 |
The NPS must be informed when Loan/Lease Agreements are made for the purposes of producing or showing |
|
22.4 |
A fully completed and signed NPS Loan/Lease Agreement Form must be sent to the NPS. This should detail the purpose and period of the Loan/Lease Agreement. This is not a legally binding document |
|
22.5 |
The NPS strongly advises that owners/breeders consult a solicitor to ensure that a legally binding document is drawn up to detail any Loan/Lease Agreement. The NPS does not need to be privy to such a document. This is a matter for the parties concerned. However it is recommended that the following points be considered for inclusion:
· Statement that the equine is on loan to X for a given period
· Whether the equine is on loan for breeding or showing purposes
· Who pays for the service of the mare
· Who owns the resultant foal
· Any conditions under which the lessee is to required to keep the equine
· Who is responsible for any veterinary bills
· Who is responsible for the Registered Equine Passport for the pony and/or the application for a Duplicate should the Registered Equine Passport be lost
· Any additional conditions
|
|
22.6 |
Remember: It is law (Horse Passport England Regulations 2004) that the Equine Passport for a pony be kept with that pony at all times. The NPS must be informed if the pony is moved to a different keeper or to different premises or if the ownership changes |
|
23.0 |
NATIONAL PONY SOCIETY – TRANSFER OF OWNERSHIP |
|
23.1 |
An up to date Transfer of Ownership Form must be completed and sent to the NPS office within 28 days of the purchase of a pony. The form must be accompanied by the correct fee and the Registered Equine Passport for the pony |
|
23.2 |
The NPS will amend the database record for the pony and will endorse the transfer in the Registered Equine Passport. The Registered Equine Passport will then be returned to the new owner |
|
23.3 |
Under Society Rules the sole owner of a pony must be 16 years of age. A parent or legal guardian must countersign the Transfer of Ownership Form if the owner is under 16 years of age |
|
23.4 |
It is strongly recommended that owners use Recorded/Special Delivery when sending valuable documentation into the office. Payment should be enclosed in order that the NPS can return the documentation by Recorded/Special Delivery |
|
24.0 |
CHANGE OF STATUS (colt to gelding or stallion to gelding) |
|
24.1 |
The Society must be notified within 28 days if the status of an animal changes. The Registered Equine Passport for the pony and veterinary evidence that the animal has been castrated together with the correct fee must be sent to the office. The Society will amend the Registered Equine Passport and database records to show the change of status and change of registration number
A Certificate of Castration may be obtained from the office or downloaded from the NPS website |
|
25.0 |
CHANGE OF NAME OF PONY |
|
25.1 |
Once registered and entered in the British Riding Pony Stud Book, the name of an animal may not be changed. The name of the pony that appears on the Registered Equine Passport is the name that must be used at all times and in all correspondence with the Society including Show Entries |
|

|
30.0 |
DNA PARENTAGE TESTING |
|
30.1 |
A DNA parentage test involves the taking of samples of either mane or tail hair. The samples are sent to the Animal Health Trust for the extraction, analysis and storage of the DNA profile. The NPS is notified of the results |
|
30.2 |
The NPS requests DNA testing for all stallions before issuing a Stallion Licence |
|
30.3 |
The NPS requires DNA testing for mares who conceive by artificial insemination and for resultant foals. The sire will have been DNA tested in order to obtain its Stallion Licence. In the case of AI the DNA testing replaces the Service Certificate as proof of covering |
|
30.4 |
The NPS may also request testing may also be requested where there is doubt as to the parentage of a pony |
|
30.5 |
Where DNA testing is required an owner may apply to the NPS office and upon receipt of the correct fee the NPS will despatch the DNA kit |
|
30.6 |

|
31. |
RECOMMENDED BREEDING PROGRAMMES |
|
31.1 |
The National Pony Society promotes the interests of pony breeding and in particular the breeding of the British Riding Pony |
|
31.2 |
The Society strongly recommends that all breeders and owners consider carefully the mares and stallions used in breeding programmes. In terms of registering foals the following is given as a general guide: |
|
31.3 |
British Riding Pony Stud Book (BRPSB) ponies will have 3 generations or more of registered ancestry and therefore will have proven breeding of recognised quality. The progeny of a BRPSB mare and stallion would also expect to be registered as a BRPSB pony
British Riding Pony Stud Book ponies are highly recommended for breeding purposes |
|
31.4 |
Riding Pony Mare/Stallion Register (RPM/RPS) ponies will have 1 generation of proven breeding of recognised quality (may be more, but not the 3 full generations required for the British Riding Pony Stud Book). The progeny of a Riding Pony Mare and a Riding Pony Stallion may expect to be registered as either RPM/RPS or as a BRPSB pony
Riding Pony Mare Register ponies and Riding Pony Stallions Register ponies are recommended for breeding purposes |
|
31.5 |
Riding Pony Appendix Mares (RP.AM/) are the progeny of unknown or unregistered dams or of part bred sires and therefore may only have proven breeding or a percentage of native blood on the sire’s side. Appendix mares have been known to produce quality foals. However, a colt foal born to an Appendix mare would not be eligible for registration under NPS rules until it was gelded
The NPS does not actively encourage the use of Appendix mares for breeding purposes |
|
31.6 |
British Riding Pony Baseline ponies will have been sired by stallions not in possession of a recognised stallion licence. The stallion has not therefore been vetted for breeding purposes and has not been vet checked for congenital or hereditary diseases
Baseline ponies are not generally considered suitable for breeding purposes |
|
32.0 |
TIME LIMITS |
|
32.1 |
There are no time limits for registering stock imposed by the Society. The Society will consider for registration animals of any age provided Registration Application Forms are fully and accurately completed |
|
32.2 |
Note: It is law (Horse Passport England 2004) that all equines must have an equine passport by 6 months of age or by 31 December of the year of birth |
|
33.0 |
LATE ENTRY FEES |
|
33.1 |
Late entry fees will be incurred if Registration Application Forms are received
- after a pony is 6 months of age
- after 31 December in the year of birth
- more than one year of birth
|
|
33.2 |
Late entry fees do not apply to geldings |
|
33.3 |
Late entry fees do not apply to ponies already registered with another Breed Society where the end result of the NPS registration process is the overstamping of the existing Registered Equine Passport already issued for that pony |
|
33.4 |
The Society strongly recommends that all breeders register and passport their foals by 6 months of age |
|
34.0 |
INELIGIBILITY |
|
34.0 |
The Society has the right to refuse to register a pony for entry into the National Pony Society Stud Book if in its opinion:
· the evidence accompanying the application is unsatisfactory or incomplete
· the name of the animal is unsuitable or objectionable |
|
35.0 |
ERRORS AND OMISSIONS IN THE REGISTRATION PROCEDURE |
|
35.1 |
In the event of any error or omission by the Society or any of its officers or staff, resulting in the registration of a pony contrary to any of the foregoing Rules and Regulations, the Society will investigate the matter and will:
· Confirm the registration in spite of the fact that it was made contrary to one or more of the above Rules and Regulations
· Re-register the pony correctly according to one or more of the above Rules and Regulations
· Refuse to confirm the registration of the pony if the registration was made contrary to the above Rules and Regulations and order the entry to be deleted |
|
36.0 |
EXPORT |
|
36.1 |
The Society must be informed if an owner/breeder or agent intends to export a registered British Riding Pony from the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland. The Society will supply a form for this information to be recorded |
|
36.2 |
Owners/breeders or agents will also need to apply to DEFRA for an Export Licence. If a Certificate of Minimum Value is required, the Society keeps a list of area Judges who may be contacted to make the valuation |
|
36.3 |
By Law (Horse Passport England 2004) the Registered Equine Passport of a pony to be exported must be submitted to the Society (or the Secretary of State) in order that Section IX may be countersigned

THE NATIONAL PONY SOCIETY REGISTERED EQUINE PASSPORTS |
|
|
It is Law (Horse Passport England 2004) that all equines must have a passport
The National Pony Society is a DEFRA approved Passport Issuing Organisation |
|
37.0 |
Issue of an Equine Passport as the end result of the registration process
The end result of the registration process is the issue of a National Pony Society Registered Equine Passport which fully complies with the legal requirement and which shows all known and verifiable breeding for the pony. (Formerly the Society issued Certificates of Registration as proof that a pony was registered with the Society.) |
|
38.0 |
Overstamping of Registered Equine Passports issued by another society as the end result of the National Pony Society registration process |
|
38.1 |
A pony may have dual registration (ie may be registered with more that one society) but by Law (Horse Passport England 2004) may only have one passport |
|
38.2 |
Where a pony has first been registered by another society and another society has already issued a Registered Equine Passport for that pony, the NPS will not issue another passport for that pony as the end result of the NPS Registration process |
|
38.3 |
The end result of the NPS registration process in these circumstances is that the existing Registered Equine Passport will be overstamped with the NPS registration details |
|
38.4 |
The Society must first of all be satisfied that all the details contained within the existing Registered Equine Passport are fully and accurately completed |
|
38.5 |
In the event that any aspect of the pony’s breeding is found to be inaccurate or incomplete the Society will refer this back to the owner in order for the details to be checked and where appropriate corrected by the society who first issued the passport |
|
38.6 |
In the event that any aspect of the passport is found to be lacking or contrary to the Horse Passport England 2004 legislation the Society will refer this back to the owner in order for the matter to be checked and where appropriate corrected by the society who first issued the passport |
|
38.7 |
The National Pony Society will not overstamp a Registered Equine Passport that is found to be incomplete or inaccurate or that in its opinion has been issued contrary to the Horse Passport England 2004 legislation |
|
38.8 |
A page entitled “Details of other Society Registrations” should be provided within the existing passport for the purposes of overstamping |
|
39.0 |
Issue of Equine Passports in place of the original Certificate of Registration |
|
39.1 |
Owners in possession of the original Certificate of Registration for their pony may apply to have this exchanged for a Registered Equine Passport. All the verified details that are on the original Certificate of Registration will appear in the Registered Equine Passport. The Society will retain the original Certificate of Registration |
|
39.2 |
Owners of registered British Riding Ponies who can not produce the original Certificate of Registration must apply for a Duplicate Registered Equine Passport (The Society ceased issuing Certificates of Registration in 1998) |
|
40.0 |
Issue of Duplicate Registered Equine Passports |
|
40.1 |
In the event that a Registered Equine Passport or the original Certificate of Registration for a pony has been lost an owner may apply to the Society for a Duplicate Registered Equine Passport |
|
40.2 |
An application for a Duplicate Registered Equine Passport must be submitted on an up to date application form |
|
40.3 |
Upon receipt of a fully and accurately completed application form, the Society will check the pony details and the newly completed Description and Markings Diagram against the data already held for the pony |
|
40.4 |
The Society will write to the previous known owner of the pony requesting signed confirmation that they no longer own the pony and that they do not hold the Registered Equine Passport or original Certificate of Registration for this pony. A stamped addressed envelope will be enclosed to encourage a prompt reply |
|
40.5 |
If no reply has been received within 28 days a Duplicate Registered Equine Passport will be issued to the applicant |
|
40.6 |
Details of the Duplicate Registered Equine Passport will be kept on the database |
|
40.7 |
In the event that the lost Registered Equine Passport is subsequently found this must be returned to the Society immediately |
|
40.8 |
The Society can not be held responsible for reproducing in the Duplicate Registered Equine Passport any completed data in the original “lost” passport. It is the owner’s responsibility to ensure that any vaccinations, medical records or JMB Height Certificates are re-entered by a Veterinary Surgeon |
|
40.9 |
By Law (Horse Passport England 2004) Section IX of a Duplicate passport must be signed as “not intended for slaughter for human consumption” by the Society |
|
41.0 |
Issue of Replacement Passport |
|
41.1 |
The National Pony Society will issue a Replacement Passport if it is necessary to amend any errors or omissions. A fee may be required. See Errors and Omissions below |
|
42.0 |
Rescinding of Equine Passport in order to issue a Registered Equine Passport in its place |
|
42.1 |
The National Pony Society has the authority to rescind an Animal ID only/Non-Registered Equine Passport issued by another Passport Issuing Organisation or by the National Pony Society if new pedigree information has been researched and verified making the pony eligible for registration with the National Pony Society |
|
42.2 |
A fully and accurately completed Application Form to Rescind and Equine Passport must be submitted to the office together with the existing Equine Passport, the correct fee and a fully and accurately completed Registration Application Form |
|
42.3 |
The National Pony Society will check and confirm that the pony is eligible for registration |
|
42.4 |
The National Pony Society will return the existing Equine Passport to the original PIO who will be required to sign to confirm in writing to the Society that they have cancelled the original Equine Passport. The original PIO will return to the NPS any completed pages from the original Equine Passport in order that they may be incorporated into the new Registered Equine Passport. |
|
43.0 |
ERRORS AND OMISSIONS |
|
43.1 |
Every effort is made to ensure that all Registered Equine Passports issued by the National Pony Society are fully and accurately completed. Breeders and owners are requested to check immediately upon receipt that the details in Registered Equine Passports and other documentation issued by the Society are correct |
|
43.2 |
The Society will add to, or amend, free of charge, any documentation issued where the Society is found to have made an error, providing the Society is notified within 28 days of issue. After that time an administration fee may be charged for the amendment and replacement of documentation
An administration fee will be charged for all corrections and replacements necessary as a result of misinformation on the part of the applicant |
|
43.4 |
By Law (Horse Passport England 2004) all equines must have a valid passport that is a true identity. A passport is invalid if any details contained in the passport are incorrect |
|
44.0 |
