We may wish to increase the squad size further as other children gain more experience throughout the season. The Whitaker family firmly believe in the training and producing of riders that will become future champions for Great Britain. John Whitaker International has sponsored the Pony Teams since 2004 and secured title sponsorship of the Squad which was launched in 2006. The company is investing a significant amount of money into the squad plus supplying team uniform, casual clothing, fly rugs, waffle rugs and saddle cloths; all in team colours. John Whitaker himself has also offered his input, training and course walking advice – a value that cannot be measured.
The John Whitaker International Pony Squad is for riders aged sixteen and under, riding ponies that are 148cm or smaller. These riders could well be the Olympic medallists of the future. Many of our senior riders came through the ranks of Ponies, (U16) Juniors (U18) and Young Riders (U21). From this current squad the BSJA selectors will choose a team of riders who will go forward to represent Great Britain at the European Championships later this summer. The John Whitaker International Signature range of equestrian products have been developed and worn by riding professionals. With national pride, John Whitaker International is proud to sponsor the Pony Squad.
The Squad are further supported both Northern Crop Driers and UK Sport who recognise the value of supporting youth.
Pam Dear of Northern Crop Driers who have been involved with the John Whitaker International Squad since it’s inception said “We are really enjoying supporting the John Whitaker International Squad and helping such talented youngsters who are the future hopes for British Show Jumping at senior level”. The squad receives Graze-On and Gold Blend feed as well as Megazorb bedding when they are on team duties. Many of the squad use the products at home and have been delighted with the results.
Vikki Underwood, World Class Start & Potential Manager for the BEF said “Pony riders are the first key step on the performance pathway exposing them to high class international competitions. The structured environment that the John Whitaker International Squad gives, allows a perfect foundation for competing successfully on the international stage which links to the philosophy of the World Class Start & Potential programmes”.
